The process to start a new Student Chapter is outlined in the Administrative Handbook. Broadly you will need information about your university and department, a faculty advisor, chapter officers, and bylaws.
How do I find a faculty advisor?Ideally, a faculty advisor is an existing CORS member, so start by reaching out to faculty who are involved in the operations research community. A faculty advisor's main role is to be a resource for departmental contacts and to inform the CORS council when the chapter president changes.
What should the student chapter bylaws look like?Here is an example that can be used as a template: University of Toronto Bylaws
Do student chapters receive funding? Where can I find out more about funding?Yes, student chapters receive finding, it is administered by the CORS Treasurer. Due to recent changes with the CORS accounting system, student chapter budgets are to be announced. All expenses must be submitted to the treasurer using the expense claim form. Any questions regarding funding can be directed to the CORS treasurer at treasurer@cors.ca. Details about the Traveling Speakers Program (TSP) can be found on the CORS website.
Who is my CORS Student Councillor and is their role?The current Student Councillor is Danielle Ripsman (Toronto). The Student Councillor serves a one-year term on the CORS council and must be a Student Member of CORS/SCRO at the start of the term. The Student Councillor represents the interests of student members and advocates on their behalf. They serve on the Education and Student Affairs Committee which is responsible for administering and implementing programs in support of Student Members of the Society.
What kinds of events can my student chapter run?Examples of events include:
- Student research talks
- Invited research seminars
- Social events, such as a trivia or board games night
- Meet and greets with Professors
- Workshops, e.g., Using Latex to write papers, Python programming
